12 years ago I visited the island of Spinalonga in Crete, an island which has a rich Greek, Venetian and Ottoman history and was subsequently used as a leper colony, to isolate people suffering from Hansen's disease from the healthy population. Unfortunately the island remained unknown for a long time.
